Compilation of 'Melanisms' planned

Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez, who has become known for her "quotable quotes" when speaking English, is planning to write a book that includes a compilation of these famous "Melanisms" over the years.

Foremost of Marquez's memorable lines was her response in the question-and-answer portion of the international pageant, where she was asked if she would insure her legs for a million dollars, like American actress Angie Dickinson had done years earlier.

"I won't change my legs," Marquez answered, "because I'm contented with my long-legged."

More than three decades and countless interviews later, Marquez said she is planning to put together similar one-liners, which have since become a signature of hers, in a book.

"I just hope this year [it gets released]. In the right time. Timing lang po iyan," she said.

"Marami pa akong iko-compile na nakakatawa, mga 'Melanisms' and quotable quotes ko, para lahat mag-enjoy -- isa na 'ko roon," the 49-year-old former beauty queen told ABS-CBN News Mario Dumaual last Saturday.

Marquez explained that the goal is to produce a humor book, saying Filipinos need a break from national issues, including the recent streak of political scandals.

"Kasi, alam mo, kailangan natin, sa dami ng problema rito, sa buhay natin, I don't think I should be negative," she said. "Sa akin talaga, positibong tao ako. It's nice also to laugh at yourselves, lalo na sa mga mistake sa grammar ko. So what? I'm not an American!"

"Pilipino ako, and I'm proud to be Pilipino. Yehey!" she said, laughing.

The mother of six is currently on vacation in the Philippines from Utah in the United States, where she operates a 200-acre ranch with her husband of 14 years, Atty. Randay Lawyer, and their family.

Marquez recently had a week-long guest appearance on the noontime program "It's Showtime" as a judge -- one of her several professional engagements in the Philippines, which she explained as the reason for her extended stay.

Asked why she has come to embrace being known for her "creativity" with the English language, Marquez said, "E kasi naman, may pagkabulol ako na sometimes po, 'yung gusto ko talagang sabihin, iba 'yung nabibigkas ko."

"But it doesn't matter," she said, looking into the camera. "As long as I can express myself and you guys can understand me, it doesn't matter!"

Ahead of the possible release of her book, here are 10 of Marquez's most memorable 'Melanisms' over the years and why she said them:
