Goat gives birth to a puppy

Residents in Barangay San Agustin, San Fernando City, La Union, were dumbfounded when a goat owned by one of their neighbors apparently gave birth to something that looked like a puppy.

Jovita Ochoco told ABS-CBN News that she was shocked after seeing that one of the offspring of their pet goat looked like a newborn puppy.

"Nagsisisigaw yung asawa ko kasi nanganak na daw yung kambing namin. Pumunta ako agad, pagtingin ko... yung mukha ng sanggol, mukhang aso. Dun ako nagulat," she said.

Marilou Picorro, a resident, said: "Walang sungay, yung mukha aso talaga. Yung katawan, aso din. Nagulat kami kasi first time naming nakakita ng ganun. Sobrang unusual talaga."

Others said the goat's offspring, which died a few minutes after birth, looked like a Boston terrier.

"Sayang nga, sabi nga namin mayaman na sana ang San Agustin kung hindi yun namatay," Jovita said.

However, an expert said that it is impossible for two different kinds of animals to mate.

"Sa modern science nga, hindi nila ma-cross breed ang kambing at aso, sa ganyan pa kaya sa field lang. Hindi pwedeng mag-mate ang aso at kambing, hindi rin made-develop," Flosie Decena, city veterinarian, said.

According to Decena, what likely happened to the baby goat was a case of genetic mutation.

"Dahil ito sa gene mutation, na maaaring naaapektuhan ng malamig at pabago-bagong panahon na nararanasan ng bansa. Factor ang external conditions like weather, kung mainit, malamig, mag-mutate talaga yung genes, magiging abnormal siya," she said. -- Reports from Diane Rivera, ABS-CBN News North Luzon
