Tacloban remembers loved ones with 10,000 balloons

Ten thousand balloons lined the streets of Tacloban City on Friday, Valentine's Day, in honor of the victims of typhoon Yolanda which wreaked havoc in the city last November.

In honor of those who perished in the tragedy, the group One Tacloban put up the balloons – where the names of the fatalities and those missing are scrawled – from the airport to downtown Tacloban.

Meanwhile, students from the Panalaron Elementary School, which used as an evacuation center during the height of Yolanda, also celebrated Valentines Day, 100 days after the tragedy.

Amid their merrymaking, however, the death of 10 people who drowned in one of the school's classrooms is still fresh on their minds.

They remembered a classmate, who was able to seek safety at the roof as the flood rose. Five of the 10 who drowned were his relatives.

“Minsan nagpapatulong ako magwalis sa kanya, talagang nanginginig siya sa takot,” teacher Michelle Mission said.

Barangay 88, a coastal village, was wiped out by a storm surge during the onslaught of Yolanda.

Survivors honored those who perished and are still missing.

“Gusto naming pasalamatan ang mga tumulong at nagbigay sa amin ng pag-asa,” a resident there said.
