How Marian Rivera reacted to Anne Curtis as Dyesebel

GMA-7 star Marian Rivera, the last actress to portray Dyesebel before Anne Curtis, said she is pleased with the casting of the Kapamilya actress as the iconic mermaid in ABS-CBN's upcoming adaptation of the Mars Ravelo tale.

Rivera was asked for her reaction to Curtis' title role in "Dyesebel" during a recent press event introducing her as the new endorser of a fabric conditioner.

"Si Anne, mabait siyang kaibigan. Sobrang bait niyan sa akin. Kasi sa Instagram, makikita niyo na nagpapalitan kami ng mga message namin sa isa't-isa," the 29-year-old actress said, referring to the popular image-sharing site.

Curtis, a former GMA-7 contract artist, was announced in January as the titular star in ABS-CBN's TV series based on the comics classic.

"Wala akong nakikitang masama na, alam mo 'yun, maging Dyesebel si Anne," Rivera said. "Dahil Anne is very beautiful, napaka-lovable ni Anne, at bagay siya bilang Dyesebel."

Rivera portrayed the well-loved mermaid in a GMA-7 adaptation in 2008, a year before she took on another Ravelo character, Darna, in a TV series from the same network.

Rival ABS-CBN earned the rights to both Darna and Dyesebel, as well as 11 other Ravelo creations in April 2013 -- a deal described by the late novelist's son, Rex, as "the best option" for their family.

"Ganun talaga ang mundo," Rivera said. "May papalit at papalit bilang Dyesebel at bilang Darna, bilang kung sino pang mga character, dahil ang tao, umiikot iyan, e. Happy ako na si Anne ang gagawa [ng 'Dyesebel']."

Dyesebel, in the original comics series, is a mermaid born on land to human parents, her mother a former mermaid herself. As a child, Dyesebel is sent away to live at sea with other merfolk after being blamed by superstitious townspeople for a series of disasters.

Different takes on the classic tale have made it to the big screen as early as 1953. Popular portrayals of the title character include Vilma Santos (1973), Alma Moreno (1978), Alice Dixson (1990), and Charlene Gonzales (1996).

Joining Curtis in the cast of "Dyesebel" are Sam Milby and Gerald Anderson as hear leading men, Dawn Zulueta, Albert Martinez, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Gabby Concepcion, Ai Ai delas Alas, Andi Eigenmann and Eula Valdez, among others.

The series, which will debut on March 17 as part of ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida block, is under the direction of Don Cuaresma and Francis Pasion.
