The first winner of Pinoy Big Brother: Nene Tamayo and her Bangus Product
After several attempts at kick-starting a career in showbiz, Nene Tamayo, the first-ever winner of the hit reality show "Pinoy Big Brother" in 2005, has decided to leave the entertainment industry and focused on establishing her own business.Tamayo said she fell in love with bangus (milkfish) because of her husband, who hails from Dagupan, Pangasinan.
"Nagustuhan ko 'yung Spanish-style bangus ng tita niya. Sabi ko gusto ko magpaturo (kung paano magluto)," she said in an interview for ABS-CBN's "My Puhunan."
Once she learned how to cook the bangus dish, she started cooking it for friends. "Nagustuhan nila. Sabi nila sa akin, bakit daw hindi ako mag-business," she said.
One of her friends ordered a batch of Spanish-style bangus from her, which were given away for Christmas. "Sabi niya ilagay ko contact number ko. Hindi pa Pasko, madami nang um-order," she recalled.
Tamayo takes pride in the fact that she uses all-natural ingredients and that she does not use preservatives or MSG in her product.
With a capital of only P10,000, she now earns a lot from her business. From taking orders from friends, her Spanish-style bangus is now being sold in groceries and supermarkets.
This is not the first time that Tamayo ventured into business. She admitted that she joined "PBB" so she can have enough money to start a business.
"First time ko nakahawak ng malaking pera, kaya sabi ko, sige, magbi-business ako. Big-time agad. Anong nangyari? Nalugi. Kasi sabay-sabay. Sabay-sabay ako nagnegosyo, meron sa Angono, meron sa Quezon City. So hindi ko siya nabantayan," she admitted.
Because of her experience, she learned that she has to focus on her business.
"Natuto talaga ako doon, na kapag may negosyo ka, dapat gawin mo siya with passion, at saka, dapat nakatutok ka. Hindi 'yung magnenegosyo ka lang tapos sige, bahala na diyan, may pampondo naman. Ang pera kasi nauubos eh, so kailangan maingat din talaga," she said.
Aside from cooking, she also studied how to properly put food in bottles so as to ensure the quality of her products.
"Kung meron kang P10,000, halimbawa ibinangko mo 'yun, kahit umabot ng one year 'yun, hindi 'yun magiging P20,000 sa bangko. Hindi ko naman sinasabi na huwag silang magbangko, kumbaga para lang ma-maximize mo yung pera mo. Kahit marami kang pera, madali yung maubos. So kailangan talaga, kung mayroon kang pagkakataon, mayroon kang puhunan, magnegosyo," she said.
